ICE Raids: Protection or Persecution?

2 min read

In recent weeks, Southern California has become the center of national attention as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out widespread immigration raids across the region. Specifically in Los Angeles, this has sparked a wave of protests, with many civilians arguing that it’s impossible for anyone to be “illegal” on stolen land. In response, President Donald J. Trump has ordered the deployment of thousands of municipal troops to control the protests.

What Are ICE Raids?

ICE raids are government-led operations aimed at detaining undocumented immigrants. Agents often show up unannounced at homes, workplaces, public spaces, and even hospitals to arrest individuals suspected of living in the U.S. without legal status. These raids can happen without warning and typically involve a heavy law enforcement presence.

A Safety Measure or Human Rights Violation?

Supporters of ICE actions claim they help remove dangerous criminals and preserve the integrity of the immigration system. However, the people being targeted are often the same individuals contributing to the American economy and paying taxes. At the same time, Trump has announced plans to offer so-called “Gold Cards,” which would grant citizenship to undocumented immigrants at a price of $5 million. This raises questions about the bias and morality behind his administration’s actions.

Opponents argue that these raids don’t improve public safety but instead create a culture of fear, separate families, and destabilize communities. The situation has grown so desperate that some undocumented people have reportedly chosen to self-deport, hoping to preserve a shred of dignity rather than risk arrest.

What Happened This Weekend?

Community groups and activists organized rapid-response protest events as a response against ICE raids. Between June 6–8, 2025, ICE launched aggressive enforcement operations in Los Angeles. Over 100 people were arrested, and tear gas and rubber bullets were deployed, even often at reporters. The raids triggered immediate public backlash. Protesters flooded downtown LA, the Roybal Federal Building, and key intersections, with some even blocking the 101 Freeway. This caused Mayor Karen Bass to enforce an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and request federal assistance. In response, 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines were deployed to support law enforcement — a move that sparked additional outrage. Many argue that Trump is directing his resources to the wrong issues, while murder and rape are being excused and seen lightly.

Final Thoughts

While the protests and actions are dying down, this weekend’s ICE raids and protests reveal the deep divide over immigration enforcement in America and Trump’s overarching goal of his term. For some, these actions represent lawful security measures. For others, they symbolize unchecked government overreach and disregard for human dignity. As Los Angeles continues to protest, and courts weigh in on federal authority, one thing is clear: the fight over immigration policy and civil rights is far from over.
